ESMA Sets December 2026 Deadline for Pre-Settlement Readiness
ESMA has told EU market participants to finalize their allocation and confirmation processes by December 7, 2026 – nearly a year before the bloc’s broader T+1 settlement shift on October 11, 2027. The regulator says the earlier deadline reflects how directly pre-settlement efficiency affects the wider transition, and is timed to align with the UK’s own T+1 timeline for firms active in both markets.
Data Quality and Outsourcing Shape the Response
Robin Hasson, head of reconciliations product management at Smartstream, warns that speed alone won’t meet the deadline: outdated standard settlement instructions and reference data can undermine even the fastest reconciliation engine, and AI can help catch these issues before they reach the network. With Level 3 guidance still pending, sell-side firms are largely building in-house while the buy side increasingly looks to outsource pre-settlement processing to third parties.
