Rothera automates derivatives reconciliations on Air
TradeTech Eye reported on 6 October 2026 that Rothera, a U.S.-based CFTC-regulated event contract market, has gone live on Smartstream’s Air. The Cash and Data modules now handle around 1.7 million daily transactions, replacing manual reconciliation processes across Rothera’s exchange and clearinghouse operations.
The first phase covers two reconciliation streams, Exchange-to-Clearing Instruments and Exchange-to-Clearing Trades, with further flows planned as the rollout continues.
Why regulated exchanges need audited automation
The article notes that event contract markets can see transaction volumes spike quickly on market news or specific outcomes, which leaves little margin for error in manual matching. Air ingests and matches complex derivatives data with minimal human oversight, so Rothera’s clearing team can focus on operational oversight while keeping a complete audit trail aligned with CFTC obligations.
This is the kind of high-volume, fully audited environment that Smartstream’s reconciliation solutions are built to support.
What it means for clearinghouses
TradeTech Eye reads the deployment as a sign that automation is becoming a regulatory necessity for high-volume derivatives venues, and asks whether AI-led reconciliation holds its accuracy in volatile markets. It also quotes Joseph McGlawn, Chief Clearing Officer of Rothera, on extending automation to additional workflows over time.
