Smart Collateral – Japanese Megabank – Cloud Migration for Scalable Collateral Management

Overview

A leading Japanese megabank with global operations, primarily focused on the Japanese market, migrated Smart Collateral to the cloud by adopting Smartstream’s On-Demand deployment model.

Challenge

The bank processes a large volume of margin calls within the Japanese market and needed a more flexible operating model. It required a solution that would allow staff to work remotely without relying on Citrix, while reducing the substantial hardware footprint associated with its existing infrastructure.

Solution

The bank implemented Smart Collateral On-Demand, incorporating several bespoke enhancements. Tasks previously executed via command-line were transitioned into the application through the development of a new process runner, enabling real-time extracts to be executed directly within the system. To meet the bank’s security requirements for email communications, Smartstream introduced S/MIME (Secure Multi-Purpose Internet Mail Extensions), enabling digital signatures to verify message integrity and ensure emails remain unaltered throughout transmission.

Benefits

Smart Collateral On-Demand delivers a private cloud environment with strict data segregation, eliminating data-commingling concerns while fully supporting client-specific customisations. The cloud model offers strong performance, reduced installation and upgrade costs, and no enforced upgrade cycles. Hardware costs are lowered, and the bank benefits from comprehensive production support, business continuity, audit capability, and archiving as part of the service.
