Smartstream Further Enables Collateral Teams with Instant Answers and Controlled Automation through New MCP Servers

15 September 2026

Key Facts

  • Smart Collateral helps financial institutions manage the complete margin and collateral lifecycle, providing the control, visibility and governance required to operate at scale. Teams can now interact with that information in plain language, getting answers on agreements, eligibility, positions, margin calls and interest calculations without navigating multiple screens and reports across separate systems.
  • Workflow actions, including creating or failing movements and issuing margin calls, are opt-in, so each firm decides exactly what an AI assistant is permitted to do.
  • Two Model Context Protocol servers connect any MCP-compatible AI assistant to Smart Collateral: one for operating the platform’s APIs, one read-only over the reporting database.

Solving Collateral’s Growing Data and Automation Challenge

Smartstream, the trusted data solutions provider for leading global financial institutions and enterprises, today announces two new Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers for Smart Collateral, enabling dynamic, agentic collateral operations. Firms can connect an MCP-compatible AI assistant directly to their collateral management platform and interact with it conversationally, giving teams instant answers and controlled workflow automation while retaining full governance and oversight.

Collateral operations have grown steadily more complex. As margin requirements rise and regulatory expectations continue to evolve, financial institutions are under pressure to lower operational risk and raise efficiency across the collateral lifecycle. Yet when markets move quickly, teams must still assemble a picture from several systems before they can act on it, while manual steps that would benefit from automation wait on scarce development resource. AI adoption is expanding across these organisations, but delivers little without timely, well-governed data.

The business benefits are clear. By providing immediate access to accurate collateral data and operational insights, firms can investigate issues faster and make better-informed decisions, reducing the risk of acting on an incomplete picture. Integration work that would otherwise sit in a development queue can be started straight away. And because MCP is an open standard, firms can use MCP-compatible assistants they have already approved and trust, rather than committing to a proprietary ecosystem.

Two Purpose-Built MCP Servers for Operations and Development Teams

“Collateral teams spend too much of their day hunting for answers and writing integration code,” said Jason Ang, Program Manager for Smart Collateral at Smartstream. “These MCP servers let firms point an AI assistant of their choosing straight at Smart Collateral, interrogating reporting data on demand, operating the integration APIs and, only where they choose to enable it, acting under their control. Because we ship domain skills alongside the tools, the assistant already understands collateral workflows, so teams get accurate answers immediately rather than spending months bridging prompts to outcomes. It is an open, standards-based approach that keeps our clients in charge of their data, their workflows and their governance.”

The first server turns Smart Collateral‘s integration APIs into a secure toolset an AI assistant can operate directly, spanning agreements, positions, margin activity and interest calculations. It can also pre-validate a proposed movement against Smart Collateral’s existing eligibility and concentration rules before anything is executed. Write actions are switched off by default and enabled one at a time.

The second gives AI assistants read-only access to Smart Collateral’s reporting database. A question returns a concise answer instead of a trail of reports, and dashboards can be assembled quickly as they are needed.

The same infrastructure also supports development teams, helping them scaffold integration code, generate reconciliation and exception-handling routines, and prototype automation workflows, all still subject to each firm’s normal review, testing and deployment process.

The result is a simpler, more intuitive operating experience: less navigation, faster answers, trusted data and governed actions, all delivered through a single conversation between teams and their collateral data.
